YEAR 9 & 10 NETBALL REPORT In week two, a group of 13 keen netballers competed against 10 other Geelong schools at Geelong Basketball Netball Centre. Our A team made it through to the semi-finals, losing narrowly to Geelong High, whilst it was our B team that surprised us – with a couple of convincing wins despite only having 6 players.

African Drumming Incursion

Year 7 and Year 9 Music Incursion – African Drumming.

On Wednesday, Year 7 and Year 9 Music students along with members of the Rock Band and Choir had the opportunity to experience some African Drumming workshops. Each workshop was full of energy, dancing and lots of drumming. This incursion will support students with their Music Cultures unit of study. A big thanks to Miss Newman for arranging the incursion and to Year 7 teachers who supported students through their workshops.

The Just Think program is a Geelong Cats initiative that promotes positive behaviours in relation to drinking among young people. The campaign aims to educate Lara Secondary College students and students from other schools in the Geelong region about responsible drinking, and to encourage them to “Just Think” before things get out of hand. Congratulations Neville!

A huge congratulations to our Maintenance Manager, Neville Gillett who recently received the Melville Jones Fellowship Award from the Lions Club. This is the highest award Lions can achieve internationally. The award is to recognise outstanding Lions who have made a significant contribution to Lionism. Spine Crackers visit State Library

On Wednesday 7th June the Spine crackers travelled by train to Melbourne to the State Library of Victoria. Once at the Library students participated in a Research Skills workshop in the library’s onsite computer lab. The learning focus was for our students to become critical, creative and independent researchers, the workshop also included an introduction to the library’s onsite and online resources as well as advice on researching information via reliable websites.

YEAR 8 BOYS SOCCER

The Year 8 boys Soccer team did themselves proud last Tuesday 23rd May. With some of the students playing their first ever competitive games of soccer, they came up against a much experienced Bellarine Secondary College in their first match.Lara had a few chances but were not able to take them and Bellarine took a 2-0 win.

The boys bonded together well in their second game and some great defensive efforts were rewarded with a 0-0 draw against Oberon High School.

Music Soiree

Around two hundred parents and family members attended last week’s Music Soiree. Our Director of Music, Rebecca Newman, long time instrumental music teacher, Mark Bennett, and great Lara Secondary supporter and ex instrumental teacher, Lyn Spiteri , hosted the most outstanding musical evening ever presented at Lara Secondary College.
