Book Club - "Spine Crackers"
Inspired by the National Year of Reading, the Spine Crackers Book Club was founded in 2012. The inaugural members came up with the quirky name. The group has established at around 20 members across all levels and includes library staff. This year Spine Cracker meetings are held in the library on the last Thursday of the month at recess. Literature is discussed over light refreshments. New members are always welcome.
In the early years all Spine Crackers read The Hunger Games, The Hobbit and The Book Thief and in recent years personal choice classics and novels set in Australia. Library staff can rely on Spine Crackers to recommend eBooks to purchase for Lara Secondary College’s OverDrive Digital Library. Some members are avid book readers, others when time permits.
Spine Crackers usually go on two excursions during the year. Past excursions have included visits to the State Library doing workshops such as Living Library, Calligraphy and Make Your Own Book. In 2016 Spine Crackers went to Melbourne and did a tour of the Library at the Dock and had a ride on the Melbourne Star Observation wheel.
The Geelong Regional Library kindly invites Spine Crackers to participate in workshops. In 2016 Spine Crackers did a guided tour of the impressive Dome Library in Geelong and attended author Scot Gardner’s story writing workshop. The Lara Library also offers Book Club members school based activities such as Blackout Poetry which was enjoyed by all.
The Spine Crackers get together to talk about books read, and to recommend good reads to each other. Meetings and activities are enjoyed by the group brought together by a shared love of reading.
